  • 2.8 main bearing questions

Hello, this is my first engine build, I have a 2.8, which was in a 1985 Fiero, that I have taken apart and that I am slowly rebuilding. The engine itself was in general in good condtion except for a cylinder that had had water in it. I ve had the block cleaned and the cylinders oversize and I have most of the parts to start rebuilding it except for the main bearings.

I have bought main bearings twice; the first time I got main bearings for the smaller diameter journals found in early 2.8s and the second time I got std. size bearings for the later model 2.8. Neither of which fit the block, the std. size bearings are to small.

The block has the #820 casted on it which I found out is the number for a FWD 2.8 found in many GM cars, including the fiero. The crank is casted 817. Through research I have found that the main bearing bore size for a 1985 2.8 is 67.289mm, but when I measure my block and journals bore size I have 73.8 mm.

I thought that maybe the engine had been rebuilt previously and that the main and journals had been bored so I looked at the engravings on the back of main bearings and found the following :

    GM 4
    18011212 and on the other end 268 N 532

Now since it is written GM on it I assume that it is the main bearings that came in the engine from factory but I could be wrong.

Now do I have an odd ball block and ive looking for the wrong parts all along (quite unlikely) or has this engine been opened before (quite probable). Where can I find he right part.

Help would be very appreciated. Thank you.

I don't think its possible to get bearings that are 5mm oversize. Do the standard size bearings fit the crank?

Yeah, last time I had to order off standard bearings I think they went in .25mm increments up to a max of 1mm over.

5mm would be a lot to take off of a crank.

A one piece rear main seal will signify large bearings. A two piece seal means you have the small bearings.

Under/over sized main bearings refers to the inside of the bearing where it contacts the crank, the O.D. is still the same. This is for undersizing, or re-sizing cranks that have had excessive wear or damage.

If late main bearings don't fit then someone has line honed the block and used some other bearing, from some other engine.

Don't be surprised if the bearings are packaged wrong too.
