  • 3.4 liter hesitates and surges under a load.

I noticed two days ago that my 3.4 was idling rough early in the morning, but when I reversed out of my parking space, no power. It hesitates and loses power really bad in first and second, but runs okay while idling. It surges while driving and seems to mellow out at higher rpms. I changed my plugs, wires, choke cap and fuel filter trying to narrow it down, but unfortunately none of them had an effect.I rebuilt the carb a month ago, and before you say something, I set the floats.I'm making carb adjustments, but that doesn't seem to effect it much either. Any ideas?

    Vacuum leak?
Or maybe there's a piece of junk in the fuel passages of the carb.

Does the problem go away once it's warm?

It doesn't really go away, it idles better but still stumbles when I accelerate and surges while driving. I'm going to pull my carb out today and see if there is anything in it restricting flow, and replace the few vacuum lines I have.

Go grab a vacuum gauge and a Haynes manual, the readings you get should point you in the right direction.

Try spraying carb cleaner around the carb and intake while the motor is running, if the revs go out at a particular point you have a leak.

Also pull those plugs again and see if one's bad. I've seen the ceramic insulator break off and slide down, shrouding the electrode. Thus giving you a dead cylinder.

Sounds like misfire to me. Check the ignition if your certain the carb is ok.
