  • Possibly tooth off on timing chain? '85 S10 2.8

I recently had the motor out of my truck to freshen some things up and i replaced the timing chain while i was there. Lining up the timing marks didnt go as smoothly as i had wanted but i settled for "close enough". No matter how is tried to line them up I was about 1/16" off at the best. So i figured it was good enough. Now, that its running, I'm experiencing low power and cant get the ignition timing close to the timing tab. Does this sound like a poor timing chain install and is there a "shortcut" i can take to resolve it?

How can you not get close enough? it's two dots one up and one down, if your off any amount then a key way on something is screwed up.

Thats what i thought too, my crank gear had no markings at all so i aligned the keyway straight up with a little square piece on the guide. Maybe this is the problem? The cam gear only had a triangular "tooth" on the inside which i assumed was the mark. I pointed the two marks towards each other (cam at 6 o'clock and crank at 12) because the picture on alldata was vague to say the least. But with the keyway lined up perfectly with the notch on the guide, the crank gear was off just a fraction of an inch.

AHHHHHH that is not right at all. There is a small dot on each gear right on the tooth. If there is no mark then the timing set you bought is a piece of shit and you should not use it. You need to take it apart and check!

That was the problem, i ordered gears and the new crank gear was marked as it should be. I cant explain the missing mark on my old one but it runs good now. Thanks guys

Cheap parts, that's probably the reason why there wasn't a mark... kinda sad when people sell Chinese knock off's that aren't even usable... never mind the fact that they even pass a QC check.
