This is my daughter's car. 2.8L engine. The trouble started in August when she said it got hot in traffic. It didn't overheat. I checked it later that day and neither radiator fan would come on. I unplugged the engine coolant temperature sensor and both fans came on. I replaced the ECT sensor with a spare but the fans still wouldn't come on.
I've been driving it ever since, trying to sort out the trouble. At first it was running incredibly rich, using a lot of gas. It's running fairly well now, but still isn't 100%. Here's what I've changed/replaced:
Crank sensor
02 sensor
ECT sensor
Temp gauge sensor
Fuel injector #1 (low impedance)
MAP sensor
Ambient air temp sensor
When the car is cold it will start easily and run well. Once it's warm, if I shut it off it will only start if I give it a little throttle. Then it will run roughly for several seconds, before finally smoothing out and accelerating to about 2000 rpm, then slowing down to idle. After that it runs fine, though it will sometimes quit while in traffic or when I shift from reverse to drive while backing out of parking space.
Is the ECM bad? Can I get a replacement from the salvage yard and just plug it in and go?
The car has 243,000 miles on it. My brother was the second owner and drove it for more than a decade. He had the engine rebuilt about three years ago. A few months later he blew a head gasket so he gave the car to me. I replaced the head gaskets and the car has run well, until now.
