This is the diagram for the 3.1 vacuum system. I replaced the aging and cracked lines between the air control valves, air vacuum solenoid valve, and the manifold.

Since the diagram is as if you were looking down on the engine from above, it presents me with a problem.

The lines were in bad shape, and may have not been connected properly. My question is where the lines connect to the solenoid. Is the "front" line (that connects to the air control valves) the top line on the solenoid, and the "back" line (that connects to the check valve and the mainfold) the bottom line on the solenoid (the connections on the solenoid are vertical). Or does it not matter which hose is connected to which?

Thanks in advance for helping a very amateur "mechanic" do some basic work to keep the car running.

Giving something back. Here is a PDF of a lot of vacuum setups.

First off, welcome to the site.

Looking at the image, notice that there is a "bump" on top of the solenoid. Since you say the connections to the solenoid are vertical, look for a similar "bump" either on the top or the bottom of the solenoid. If nothing like that exists, then I would take the image literally. The line on the top of the image would be the top connection on the solenoid, and the line on the bottom of the solenoid would be the bottom connection. Hope that helps!
