  • 2.8 Motor ID

I have what I believe to be a gen1 2.8L RWD motor found in a storage unit. Still in the crate from a rebuilder(?) but I'm not sure what years and cars it will fit. I have some pics, but will start with the engine vin, if that will help... 14071177.
I'd like to sell the motor, but need to ID it for potential buyers. Any help is appreciated.

    That appears to be a 90 degree 4.3L V6.

"It's your car. Do with it what you wish, but as you enter this unknown world you will need to invent the wheel all over again. For the adventurous and those that are backyard mechanics who have nothing but time you might like this. Most have plenty of frustrating moments and the process usually takes significantly longer then what anyone could imagine. The end result of this conversion is completely up to you." - Jon McCullough of BMCautos.com

Pic #2 pretty much identifies it as TechRod said - 4.3L.

Wow, was I off! Should have seen the big "4.3L O" in the pic...
There was a 85 Cherokee in the unit with it's original 2.8 V6, so I thought this was a replacement motor.
Think it's worth $800 without the warranty?

Also, would this be the 155 hp LB1 or an LB4?

No way to tell what one it is unless you ID the heads. It could be a CPI Vortec engine which means a high lift cam and improved heads. All you can tell is that it is 88 to 92 because it has a roller cam but no balance shaft. Along with Truck and Van owners this engine is great for boat owners so if there is a marine section in the classifieds be sure to list it there.

betterthanyou, thanks for the marine advice. Would any year of the 4.3 work for boats, or is there a certain series?
I had thought the 14071177 designated an older, 1st-series block, split rear seal, etc.
The head casting shows 14079248 and EO55 below that, (pic attached).
Hey, I'm a big-block guy though, so these motors are kind of new to me.

Physically the 4.3L will bolt to anything that a small block will. The mounts were the same from beginning to the end of production. If you just want to sell it then throw it on craigslist and use lots of keywords so it shows up a lot and make sure you post it in the car/truck, RV and marine sections.
