  • Carb question.

    Hi everyone!
I've been working on this 84 2.8L jeep for a little while now. I getting kind of puzzled with a few of the problems its having. The biggest problem is the carb. Its got small vacuum leaks along the gasket that seperates the upper and lower part of the body. Also a couple of small leaks at the base of the carb. I also checked the vacuum hoses with carb cleaner. They were fine. I'm showing about 9" of manifold vacuum. That seems pretty low. especially when the idle is stuck at about 1800 rpms. Cant seem to make the idle adjustment screw move. The ignition timing is dead on at 18 degrees btdc but hard to tell for sure with the idle that high. Could the low manifold vacuum be totally the carbs fault? or should I be looking for some additional problems? Intake manifold leak? Timing chain skipped a tooth? What carb would be a suitable replacement? Any help would be welcome!

The carb is most likely a Rockester 2SE. If there is warpage in the carb it may be due to over tightened bolts. A full rebuild may be in order if it has not been done in a long time. If the carb is leaking between the upper and lower section then they will have to be checked for straightness. If they are out then it may be easier to find a rebuilt one from a parts store.

Manifold vacuum should be at 20" or just above but if you cannot get the idle down it will not get that high because you obviously have vacuum leaks. Also your timing is much too high. It should be 8* to 10* at hot idle with the vac advance disconnected

Thank you very much for the reply. Thats the exact information I was looking for. Every type of engine has those little quirks you need to be aware of. I have several different carbs I could adapt to the manifold. Is that a good idea? Or is it best to stay with the factory carb? I've got a couple of motorcraft 2150's. They are fantastic carbs. Again thanks for the info.

The 2SE is just like a Quadrajet but sliced down the middle to make a 2bbl. Drivability and performance is great when its working the way it is supposed to but they can be temperamental at times. I would get the stock carb working. They are one of the best street carbs you can run.
