  • A/C Delete.

Hey everyone, my unused A/C compressor decided to shit on me the other day and now my car is out of commission. I got a '96 Grand Am with the 3500 in it, and I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can get an A/C Delete Pulley. I am going to try the 2.8 set up tomorrow with idler pulley that mounts on the front cover if i am not mistaken, but i highly doubt thats gonna work 'cause it seems like my lower engine mount sits right where that pulley would be. Either way it's worth a try, but if anyone does know of a place where i can get a dummy pulley that bolts into the A/C compressor holes, please let me know.

We installed an A/C delete pulley from what I think was a 2000 GA with a 3400 from www.rockauto.com on an Achieva. I can't remember for sure if that's what the pulley was ordered from, but I know for a fact that there is one made for the pushrod cars. I also do not recall if the stock sized belt was used after that or not.

Thanks man, rockauto.com is a good place. I just got in touch with them and they can have the pulley here for me in 1-3 days with FedEx Air but I'm gonna try the old 2.8 set up first and if that doesn't work, I'm gonna order the bypass pulley.

Don't forget to use the 5% off code. I forgot what area it's under, but it's a sticky at the top of one of the sub-forums around here and we try to keep it updated any time someone uses it. When you use it or order without it from Rockauto you get a new one by email which people tend to post back in on that thread with to keep it going.

there's another way which i used on my car and it works fine. still gives the same amount of belt pressure on the water pump so no worry about overheating.

basically you just replace one of the smooth pulleys with a ribbed one and get a significantly shorter belt.

just another option for you. not saying you have to do it this way.

i have also tried the way where you get the delete pulley bracket that basically takes the place of the ac compressor.

i'd like to see a picture of your setup GeldartB, my old room mate ran a shorter belt and removed the A/C compressor, it always ran hot, the back side of the belt was polished, and the pulley for the water pump had a groove run in it. I told him he was a retard for doing that. but he insisted it made his car sooo fast!
I would imagine the 2.8 A/C pully delete brake will work on the 3500 with modifacation. If not, i'd like to see a comparisson, because a 5.0L ford pully and bracket a/c delete is extremely close to a 2.8/3.1

i'll get some pics friday. as far as belt to water pump contact it's pretty tight and i would probably say it's the same as if i had everything on there as normal.

i did this beacause my compressor was getting noisy and the system was empty anyway.
