  • 3X00 compatability with RWD trannies ?

Hey guys, first time poster ... long time lurker ...

Anyways, I'm making plans for a future project, but want to get all the information that I can before I start out.

I'm wondering if any of the 3X00 family of engines will bolt up to a typical GM RWD tranny ? Specifically a T-56 ?

I heard that the starter is on the wrong side, but that there was some bellhousings that would allow for it.

    Any ideas ?

Yes you can get a Camaro bellhousing with a starter pocket on both sides. There are also 2.2L S-10 housings with the starter pocket on the drivers side. The transmission does not care where the starter is.

Bolting to a T56 is going to depend on what one you have. The old Camaro ones are the easiest to work with. However your really going to have to pick through the details of input length, spline count, clutch discs and throw out bearings.

and an adapter since the bolt pattern is different...

Mars is bolting a TH350 to his 3400 in the camaro though, he found an adapter online. I bet it would work on the T56 too.

I would prefer to use an LS1 T-56 if at all possible ... they seem to be a much higher regarded tranny in terms of survivability and reliability. I was just wondering if there was an easy option.

        I guess not LOL

LT1 T56 are fine... just not the 93 version. those seem to only hold ~360 lb-ft compared to the 450 the 94 and later hold... and since the LT1 has the same bellhousing as a classic SBC, that adapter plate meant for a TH350 should work.

They have removable bell housings so you may be able to use and existing 60 degree v6 bell housing or and adapter from the T56 to the old T5 pattern. Not sure on the specifics though.
