  • HELP have water in block

    Hi all,
im a newby to this forum. i have a 98' cutlass gls with a 3.1L, i recentley blew what i think may be the head gasket, but i think it may be also may be the intake. I drained the oil and refilled the expansion tank and started the car but to know avail water and oil started mixing in the pan immeadiatley. i started to take of the intake plenum but really need some guidance. do i also need to keep the timing on the block once i pull off the heads or do i just send the car ro the junkyard in the sky?????
    thanks

it most def a lower intake gasket or a head gasket. take it apart down to the lower intake gaskets and if they dont look blown its a head gasket either way its all stuff that has to come off for the lower or the head gasket. u wont have to do anything with timing because the timing cover, chain ect. dosent have to be removed. but u should take out the lifters (one at a time i suggest) and take them apart and clean them. wen they get coolant in them they dont pump up.

Make sure to keep the pushrods in the proper order,,, or you could ruin things FAST!!!! At the very least it won't run good...
        Good luck,,,,
        Tom...
Probably 90% of the time it's the LIM that goes... Head gasket trouble seems to be fairly rare... Unless you are making some big numbers....

Hey dude. I'm currently putting back together my 3100 SFI on a 1997 monte carlo. Head gaskets and lower intake manifold gaskets for me. I'm nursing a shoulder injury so it's a slow rebuild, standing on gravel, down hill slant 10degrees. Sucks no garage. Take all the disassembly pictures you can and ask questions in this forum. You'll hear that the torque sequence is very very important, so follow this exactly as percribed. Get or borrow a foot and inch pound torque wrench. Label all the wires you disconnect or at the least where they came from or connected to. You might want to ask around about disassembling the lifters. I've been using this site for a good while now and that's not a practice I've seen posted ever. I never removed my lifters but i did have a race car engine builder tell me to just pour on some Wynnes Engine Restorer oil over the lifters and cam before reassembling the top half. So i did. Here is a tourqing guide i got from this site so i'll share it with you....Good luck......Tom
