I'm looking through car-part.com and found a good engine that I'm planning to swap into my Beretta to replace my 2.8, it's a 3.1 but this engine is located in Arizona and I'm in California. I called the guy and he says that the motor may not meet California emissions. I thought that all 3.1 motors were all exactly the same thing across the country and what was controlling emissions is just the computer, EGR and Cat. It should be ok right? i mean the same 2.8 that I have and has always passed emissions is the same 2.8 the rest of the country uses, right?

cali cars usually have extra crap on them, you'll probably be fine though. Just swap everything from the 2.8 onto the 3.1.

What Dave said. I would swap over the 2.8's upper intake as well, just to avoid the potential headache of a ref telling you you've done an illegal swap since the swapped engine is larger displacement and was not available in your car in your model year.Kaiser George IX: 1996 Buick Century Special wagon. 213-SFI. 250k miles. yea i figured as much. thanks guys. that was damn quick of you. I didn't expect an answer so fast.
If anyone else has input on this please go ahead.
I'm gonna grab this motor. It's only got 70,000 miles on it. It's too good an opportunity to pass up. Coming from my poor old 2.8 with 254K this will be quite a refresher.Last edited by wanako; 06-01-2010, 01:30 PM.
