  • 3.1 liter engine swap info needed

I have bought a 2000 Chevy Malibu that has the third generation 60 degree 3.1 liter I believe its the LG8 the motor is bad I have a second generation 60 degree 3.1 liter LH0 from a 91 Chevy Lumina was wondering if the motors would swap out even i was hoping to take the 2nd gen long block (block and heads) from the 91 and put the intake and everything else from the 3rd gen but if that wont work is there any way to just put the complete 2nd gen motor . I have done some research on both engines and there is differences in the two motors but they are pretty much the same motor any advise would be appreciated thanks.

Not only is that illegal but it's not going to be a fun swap. You'll have to deal with your check engine light on all the time because the gen2 3.1 doesn't have a cam sensor or a 24x crank sensor. It'll also be a dog, 40 HP less than the 3100 and the 3100's tune will run it pig rich so gas mileage will be terrible.

your best bet is to find another 3100 or a 3400 to stick in there.

    Good Luck!

Ok thanks Superdave I appreciate the info I some how didnt think it would work I did do some research on both engines before I posted this but did not think about those sensors and did realize there was a horse power difference but I figured Id at least ask some people who know more about these engines then me . I will be looking for another 3100 or even better the 3400 if it will go in it thanks again for the info

I was wondering if you had any information on pricing of rebuilt/low mileage 3100's. I am currently looking for a replacement 3.1 L (191 cu in) L82 V6 for my '95 Buick Century (it threw a rod and has a terrible knock) and I don't have much to spend on it.

a salvage yard is your best bet, finding one with low mileage will be a challenge but you can also upgrade to a newer 3100 or 3400 fairly easy.

www.car-part.com is great for finding engines.
