  • 2.8 block interchange

Ok, this is gonna seem like an odd question and I know I am gonna hear people say just swap in a v8 or different motor, but this is what I got and limited funds, so here goes.

I have a 1991 Isuzu Trooper with the LL2 2.8l. I baught the ARI 2.8 to 3.1 Stroker kit and added a Phase 2 cam kit. I also installed a 4.3 TBI. This motor is rock solid now. The Trooper it is in is rusting away. Now I have a nice engine with a sucky body lol.

Now here is what I want to do. I found a great deal on a 1989 Firebird with an almost dead LB8 2.8 MPFI. Can I bolt the Trooper LL2 2.8 directly in and just swap the TBI for the MPFI and switch the starter to the passenger side? Is there a huge difference in the 2 blocks and if so what are they?

If I could, I would drop a V8 in, and most likely will in the future. Untill then I have a built 2.8 ready to go. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since I havn't gotten any info, I will share what I have learned this morning.

I called my local salvage yard and asked if I would be able to just stick the LL2 motor right in to the Firebird. According to Spaldings that is a no. Couldn't tell me why or what the difference between the 2 are. I can however swap heads and most everything else. Right now I am thinking it is because the starter location. Was hoping the experts hear could help in that area.

I gotta get goin on this, so I have a friend ready to go to yank both motors and start tearing down and he will determine what we can do.

I have read on the forum that I can splice in the Firebird ECM into the TBI. could someone please point me in the direction of a detailed thread on how to do that on this site? I would love to keep the power gained from the tbi upgrade, unless someone has a suggestion on getting the same gains from the MPFI.

    Thanks

Starter mounting is one issue, although there is a jig available which will allow you to drill the required holes on the other side of the block. There may also be some differences in the mounting bosses between the 2 blocks. As far as a swap guide for what you are trying to do, I doubt there is a "generic" guide. You will most likely have to get the wiring diagrams for both vehicles and match up wiring. I know its been done, but its usually the opposite of what you are doing (people taking 3.4L Camaro engines and putting them into Troopers).

Thank you Bszopi. Yep, I knew I'd be going against the grain here lol. If I could afford it, I'd just swap in a V8 and have fun from there. I am still undecided about running the tbi. I know it would be simpler to just run the mpfi and call it good. Time and info will tell.

        Thanks again

The block wont bolt in without extra work. The mounts wont completely bolt up and the starter bolt holes will have to be drilled on the other side of the block. Everything else will work fine including the Camaro intake and EFI.

At one time, I thought about adding that same stroker kit to an S10 blazer, and was informed that I should just look for a 3.1 crank, rods and pistons and they would be a bolt in; another benefit is they are cheaper!!. How does that kit work out for you...has there been any problems?...Late.
