  • 3400 valve stem seals

My new head gasket kit came with new valve stem seals. I assumed i might have to use a socket and rubber malet to seat them on the valve guide boss, but they just went on and seated without me having to tap them on. Is this how easy the seals install? Just fall on? I thought there was a crimp on the metal seal to hold them in place.

Those heads have machined guides, so they are about .520" OD instead of .553" OD. Blue seals = .553. Measure the intake valve head diameter and see if tits 1.76".

The new valve stem guides that I have seen don't use crimps, which will also cause it to not grip the guide. This isn't the problem for you, but the next set you guy could be crimpless as well.

Ben my bad. These seals DO have crimps in them. My 3400 intake dia. is 1.760....I was having a terrible time finding a set of salvage 3400 heads that were not warped beyond repair so i could use them on my 1997 3100 Monte as a performance upgrade. The salvage yard said these 3400 heads came from a 2000 Lumina casting # 10218170. I still think their wrong on the year. My 3400 valve guide boss's are O.D. .515" . My 1997 3100 guide boss's are also .515". By the way, can a 3400 head and intake upgrade to a 3100 be done with 3400 head gaskets?
I doubt RockAuto will exchange these to large valve stem seals from the head gasket kit but I'll call them Monday. See if they need the whole kit returned. I can do that ........Tom

Ben. My re-ordered valve seals from Autozone are red and they are not crimped. They required a little effort by hand to seat.
