  • Dropping Subframe

What are the steps on dropping a '99 grand am subframe? And what should I go ahead and replace on the subframe while its out?

I would replace any bushings on it. Subframe to body bushings, control arm bushings, swaybar bushings, ect. As for instructions on how to do it, never done it on an N body.

on my W body's you need to have a engine support (sits on fender lips and holds engine up.. then remove the lower motor mounts and cooler line and remove the sub frame bolts.. the subframe is 2 seporate pieces on the GA's iirc where as the W-body is 1. but same process.

like this one... I built one that worked for doing my tranny out of steel.

check the bushings, replace if damaged, also check motor mounts and repalce if damaged (most likely have a fluid filled that may be leaking goop). If the sub frame bolts are stripped or bent also replace them..

Nice brace! You could always go the redneck method and just use a 4x4 and some chain. Not the prettiest way, but it works.

The subframe is out of mine right now, without a support. In fact, the front mount is also removed....

That actually works better, if the hood had to be closed enough not to hit anything above it when the car is raised.

I used a 4x4 wrapped with some chain to swap auto trannies in the 91 way back in the day. It does work shockingly well when you use shorter 4x4 chunks to hold it up off of the fenders. Also I bought one of these things at Harbor Freight fairly cheap:

                $60 takes it home...

Well Im taking the engine and transmission out so would I want to support it? Wouldnt i want to lift the car?

unless you have a car lift to lift the car stright up, it will be a PITA, i remember when i ripped out the the Q4 in my beretta with just a cherry picker, it was still a pain. I've never pulled both engine and trans out of a n body, but if i did, i would pull the tranny out the side/bottom with the one sub frame out, then the motor through the top with a picker. you dont even have to lift the car high to pull the tranny out. a 18" jack and jack stands will suffice.
like i said, unless i had a hoist, i would never do this again.

Grand am's don't have "two subframes" IIRC they have a carriage like the W-body's

I could be wrong though.. I Just remember my mom's having that over the beretta dual rails.

now that you mentioned it, you are correct. that engine stand setup would be handy in this application.

Except yours isn't at as bad of an angle due to the rear wheels being up on ramps.

Thats a good idea! but FWD's are still harder to pull out that way with out a hoiste, possible, but much easier.
