  • 97 Grand Am Gt 3100sfi

    Im looking at picking up a very nice 1997 grand am. I know its a grand am but im thinking i dig it. its a gt with the 3100sfi in and apparently this car runs the 1/4 mile 15.9 according to car and driver circa 1997.

    Im thinking it needs to be faster i have a couple cheap ideas after some serious research and id like to get your thoughts on it.

    -CAI
    -3400 upper+lower intake mani's.
    -3400 or 56mm TB
    -TB spacer from jegs.
    -180 T-stat.
    -msd coil packs and wires
    -autolite 104s.

    The car already has a stage 2 cam in it..as the motor was fully rebuilt like 30,000km ago.As well as magnaflow catback system. I was also thinking in the future headers/ 2 3/4" mid pipe and high flow cat.was also curious if i can put bigger injectors on it? considering there 19lb injectors stock could i go to an injector off an L36 3800? how many Lbs are they!?

    Any feed is much appreciated!

    stages don't mean anything, what are the cam specs?

    15.9 is about right for a bone stock 3100 GAGT, my old '04 ran a 15.7 with a stock 3400.

    The only thing in your list that will actually help power is the 3400 lower intake, but use a 3500 upper and a 65mm TB. Headers will open it up a little more.
    Past Builds;
    1991 Z24, 3500/5 Spd. 275WHP/259WTQ 13.07@108 MPH
    1989 Camaro RS, ITB-3500/700R4. 263WHP/263WTQ 13.52@99.2 MPH
    Current Project;
    1972 Nova 12.73@105.7 MPH

      Haha headers and cheep ideas are oxymoron's, but like he said i would get a 3500 upper and 65mm tb, and if you have knowledge on porting, than port the 3400 LIM and the 3500 UIM to the 3500 UIM gaskets, it will help alittle..

      And im going to be running 3800 injectors in my 3400 soon, ive been told that they are a pound or two higher

      And some say coils and wires are a waste of money, especially the coils, i hear they go bad way quicker than stock, but i cant tell you if they really do since ive never tried them..

        You can save some money by not buying the tb spacer and sticking to your stock coils and wires (unless they fail, in which-case replace with acdelco). The only gains they give are to the manfuacturers bank accounts. ZZPerformance's 9 second grand prix uses the same coils your car came with.

        Instead, spend it on a pcm tuning system like DHP or whaterver's left out there.

          I had forgot to mention i was going to get the pcm tuned from willoverkill here in canada. Hes in Toronto and pretty much a scientist for 60 and 90 degree gm v6's.

          i added the TB spacer pretty much get the kick back from you guys i wasnt sure i was almost positive they're shit but i wasnt sure...now i know.

          other then shift points and governor removal does this actually make the car any faster or perform better?

            It really depends on what gets changed. Aggresive ignition timings improve torque but require higher octane fuel to prevent detonation. Adjustments to the fuel maps will help take advantage of upgrades to the intake and exhaust.
