  • Upgrade from 2.8 to 3.4

    Hello,

I have a 2.8 from an x11 Citation in my Porsche 914. The maker of the tranny adapter, sais I can also fit a 3400 v6 . Questions: Because the Citation was front wheel drive, does the new motor need to be from a fwd car? Will the 2.8 parts bolt on to the 3400? (Such as headers, water pump etc?) I currently run a four barrell Holley. May want to run the 3400's injection. Is it a lot of work to tie the computer and wiring into my system? Is there a certain model and year car that has a better 3400 in it? Hope this makes sense. Thanks,Pete Carroll

All 3400 engines are FWD engines. The engine mounts will differ from the Citation but the starter motor is on the same side. Water pump wont work and the headers will just have to be modified with a new flange but should not be a big deal. A carb will not work unless you make a manifold. The EFI would be a better choice. All 3400's are the same so there really is no good or bad.

You could also use an Iron-Head 3.4 out of a '93-'95 Camaro or Firebird. Your current 4-bbl intake/carb setup can be used on the Iron-Head motor without modification.

You would have to drill the RWD 3.4 block to accept a FWD starter, fortunately the Fiero Dudes have a kit for this (since they also stuff a lot of RWD 3.4's into their rigs):

The FWD 3400's aluminum heads do flow a ton more than the cast-iron RWD heads so it's your choice between the simplicity of your existing setup or an even greater increase in HP and torque (and driveability) with a EFI-3400.

      HTH & what a great project!...........ed

        Great info. guys !
betterthanyou, when you say the engine mounts will differ, I assume you mean the actual holes in the block will be in a diff. location on the 3400?

Ed Mc. thanks for the info. and the link for the jig. I am a bit oldschool and the thought of adding the EFI wiring into my car makes me a bit nervous as to if I can do it or not. Is it a pretty difficult task or not too bad. Also, I am curiuos as to what HTH stands for. Thanks again, Pete

Yes the mounting holes in the block are difference from Gen I and II block but it should not be a big deal since you most likely have custom mounts already and they would just need some changes.
