  • 3.4 vrs 3.8

I have both a 3.4 in my chevy Impala and a 3.8 in a buick.
To me the 3.4 is a smoother more and efficient motor, but why has the 3.8 won all the Wards best engine awards???? I think the 3.4 is better.
    Enlighten me.

Because the 3800 is old and has been providing reliable service for many many years now. It makes nut twisting torque low down in the RPM range which helps it move big cars pretty nicely.

You are right though it is a rough motor because it is a 90* V6 and roughness is inherant that is why it has a balance shaft. But the big old iron pig never seems to die.

The 3800 is just a TOUGH engine. Iron block, iron heads, and a bottom end that can handle stupid amounts of power. 200,000 miles on a 3.8 is just the beginning of its life. The 660's are smoother and more efficient in some ways, but the 3.8 has plenty of advantages also.

I don't want to get in any arguments or anything, but the 3.8 seems to be a much more reliable engine than the 60*'s. I have to work on my 3.1 quite often to keep it running properly, yet my moms SSEi with MORE miles on it has never had any problems (other than a leaking intake manifold gasket), and its modded (and has been since the first month of its life) and its putting out around 300hp. Not only that but it gets better gas mileage than my 3.1 and it is in a car that is 600+lbs. heavier!

I think he means they came with a 90* because the sycliones and typhoons came with 4.3s I believe

You would be correct about the SyTy coming with the 4.3, but he did say 3.8, why, I don't know.

I made a mistake. I meant the 4.3 90*, Dont know why I said 3.8, probably because of the topic.

But yes, Its a 90* that holds that record.

Or maybe I meant 3.8 because of the Grand Nash. That car held a title aswell.

The 90* engines still hold these titles. But no 60*6's do.

I think that Dodge truck, that recently made its debut, with the v10 (believe its actually the same engine used in the v10 Vipers) is now the new holder of the title of fastest production truck.

When I think fastest production (in the 80's), I like to think 3.8L Turbocharged Intercooled Fuel Injected...aka 86/87 Buick Regal T-Types/Grand Nationals...not only that, it matches the Subject. They only made 245hp/355lb-ft.
