  • Couple of Questions

Where can I get more of these bolts that go into the mains?

What is that plug and where can I get more?

What goes in that hole? Is it one of those plugs?

Where can I get a replacement one of these and/or get new bolts for them?

And where can I get a new set of oil pan bolts?

    TIA

Send a PM to a Lead Member with us named John (Forced Firebird). He is a CNC Machinist, a superb mechanic... and frequently works with machining and working on re-building GM V6 series engine blocks and crankshafts. He may have a full set of lower engine "Tin" bolts and the ones missing from your crankshaft journals for sale... The vacant hole needs a "Knock Sensor" installed in it...

PS... Don't forget to replace your old galvanized steel freeze plugs in that block with these:

Awesome, I'll contact him. I dont think that hole is for the knock sensor because there was a knock sensor in the block and it was in the hole above the oil filter.

A review of the all images on my photobucket link above will give you the proper part number of the Dorman Brass Freeze Plugs. You can order them in quantity from www.rockauto.com, but they do not come in a boxed set.You will need to double check the ones on your engine for a complete count... but I believe you will require Six (6) of them: One (1) in the front... One (1) on either side and Three (3) in the back of the engine block. I stand corrected ...that hole supports the insertion of the crankshaft position sensor (CPS). It reads the passing of the Seven (7) notches in the center-weighted internal balance on the DIS Crankshaft. Here is the part required to fill it:

          What block is that?

3500 has 2 knock sensors, one on each side.

The front of the motor, the hole is for an oil pressure sending unit and the plug is 1/4" NPT.

Oil pan bolts are a specialty item and might be able to get them at a fastener supplier, but bets bet would be a junk yard and buying the new orings (comes in the bottom end 3400 kit)

Not sure what the last pic is?

The plate that holds the came from coming out and eating a hole in the timing chain cover with the cam gear. I didn't replace one in an engine I redid, I flipped it over to wear on the other side.

It is a 3400 block and I only need one bolt, so maybe I could find someone who has some for sale. And is 60dgrzbelow0 correct with the freeze plugs? I need 6 of them and the size is 34.3mm? Thanks!

Yeah, I don't really need a new one, the head of the bolt is stripped so I just need new ones.

The hole with the question marks is the oil pressure sender. You can use the plug in the oil filter housing and trade it with that hole if you have room, but one way or another oil will come out of that hole lol.

Yeah, now that pocket mentions it, that's the cam button. Roller cams tend to push to the front of a block and a flat tappet to the rear. The is a thrust surface to keep the cam from walking to the timing cover.

I may have some of those if you need, along with the oil pan/cross bolt as well.

Awesome. What about the freeze plugs? Was that the correct information?

To be honest, those freeze plugs look to be in excellent condition, I would leave them, just prod them with a screwdriver/punch to make sure the previous owner didn't run straight water in the cooling system.

                    EDIT:
If they are thin replace them

Well I'm getting the engine hot tanked, so it would be ok to just leave them?

If you intend on getting the block hot-tanked... the normal SOP is to remove all the freeze plugs and plumbing fittings to allow the cleaning agent a free hand in getting all the rusty gunk out of the block...

"Is 60dgrzbelow0...Right... about the freeze plugs...?"

Yes... My Young Paduan... he is right... or that is not a Burnt Orange carpet that motor is sitting on...

But not to worry...more than likely... the machine shop you use to do the block clean up will find and install the right ones ...if you doubt that anything other than these metric ones are the "Right" ones to install...

Should I buy new plugs before I get it hot tanked or should the machine shop have them already?
