  • easiest way to pull engine and trans

    1999 Grand Am GT w/3.4

Just as the title states, what would be the easiest? Pulling the two of them, or dropping the sub frame?

Although I've never pulled the trans, I've pulled the engine out of the top of a Beretta 3 times, and think its much easier than dropping the subframe, especially if you don't have access to a lift. If you have access to a lift, the dropping the subframe way be the easier way.

Agreed. And I've pulled a 3400 out of a TranSport out the top Besides, the factory installs the two mated together sitting on the subframe from the bottom, so it would have to come out this way pretty easy since they require so much room around the engine on all sides to consider it "doable" on the manufacturing line.

I am biased, but with a cherry picker that can go high (or a lift), picking up the body is an easy task.

I dropped the sub frame out of my cutlass to do the trans. in my opinion it was the best way to get er done. rent a cherry picker for the 30 bucks it costs and drop her out the bottom. If your doing just the trans you need to fab a motor brace for up top. if the whole package is dropping out no need. if you can get the car up high enough on stands you can rig a dolly on a floor jack to drop the drive train. my opinion. thats the way to go.

                quick illustration...

Cherry picker set to 500lbs picked it up like butter with the drivetrain on the floor

Four 8' 2x4's and a box of nails will get your typical stands high enough, just need to use some old rims/tires or ramps under the rear wheels so the back of the car doesn't hit the ground.

For a GranDAMN motor pull, just pull it from the top. If you want to pull the trans with it for some reason, drop it out the bottom.
Pulling the motor from the top will prevent the need of an alignment once put back in. Savings=Alignment cost about 100.00.
