  • 3.4 Advice Needed

    Hello,
I am new here and looking for some advice. I resently purchased a 3.4 out of a 93 camaro to put in my '76 MGB. I purchased the motor only, it seems to be complete, but I have no wiring, pcm, or transmission.

My question is ... What direction do I go from here? I'm trying to decide between Carb or FI. Newer heads (3400 or 3500)?? Computer?? I would like to have a combination of performance and reliability.

Any advice you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Dan, and welcome to 60degreev6

I would say that the biggest factor in a build like that is the almighty dollar, amount of time you are willing to spend on the car, and your mechanical abilities in no particular order.

3.4/3500 hybrid under power from a GM ECM will make that car a LOT of fun!

Welcome aboard Mr. Sample... Did the info/links to the "Brits MGB Kits" about this build that I sent you in response to your email do any good? Please be patient with the response times here to your over-arching question(s)... some times help comes in the form of a trickle... sometimes as a flood. But not to worry... it will come when everybody looks things over for you.

You should have kept things SIMPLE! Bought an earlier Engine, normally aspirated, non-electronic controlled, and a whole lot easier to fit in a MGB-Tourer.

Un-complicated. Minimum wiring. Less stuff under the hood. Easier to tune. More performance parts and accessories to add zip and look good with the Bonnet open.

Nothing that says you still can't go the Lo-Tech route and install either a stock S-10 carbureted manifold and throw a Holley or Weber 2-bbl atop, or use an Edelbrock Performer manifold in either 2-bbl or 4-bbl flavor. Offenhauser also made a 4-bbl intake for the V6-60 but they're quite rare.

Use a Non-Computer-Controlled HEI distributor out of an early S-10 (around '83 non-CA will do if I recall).

You'd also need to install an electric fuel pump since the 3.4 has no provision for a mechanical one.

That should keep 'er simple and easy to tune!

            Thanks Ed_Mc.

Would there be a big difference between a stock manifold with a 2bbl carb vs. an edlebrock with the 4 bbl?

            Thanks for the help.

Performance and reliability means aluminium heads and intake, and fuel injection.

Did you check out killer bv6 conversions? There are several MGB's running the FWD motors, all fuel injected and very fast. There's even a 3900 MGB!

It will take more time than throwing a carb on top of that 3.4L, but I would go with 3500 heads and either 3400 pistons, or keep the 3.4L pistons (will be high compression) and then go with a hot cam, and tune it with OBD1. It will be MUCH MUCH faster and start every time.

200-275 hp is much more fun than less than 160hp....

                Mr. Sample...

Drop in on Brian's image of Mike Costello's great photo lineup on this very project...using the L32 as well. (Click on the link to see the other 'Build-In-Progress" images on the right side of his page)

Also ...I know you probably already have this MGB Shop Manual for other related references... but just in case you don't... You can pick this one up off of eBay for under $20.00 + S&H

And FWIW... You've only got about Nine (9) hours left to visit this eBay offering and bid on this rare MGB-V-8 Conversion Manual which might also be a good reference to the tasks at hand...

Here is another one...from the SpeedPro Series on MGB-V-8 Conversions for more $$$...

..and this one even offers a DVD "How-To" on the conversion...some of which is probably still relevant to doing an MGB V-6 Conversion... (for around $18.00 + S&H Par Avion via England)
