is this only due to the heads & intake-or gearing? im pretty well baffled because i just looked on fueleconomy.gov & the 3400 equipped fwds (other than the van) got better mpg highway & as good if not better in town than the 3100 equipped cars-for small & large port 3100's-is this simply tranny gearing or ?

probably gearing... almost all small port 3100s got 3.33 gears, the large port got 3.08(?), the 3400s might have gone into the 2.xx range. -
Perhaps because they are simply more efficient.
My 3500 that runs low 14's, yet it gets 25+ mpg at 3500 RPM (70 mph) on the hwy.Comment

obviously: not everything is the same, and since we know the large port intakes, exhaust, cams and heads are the same between 3100 and 3400, it narrows down what is different to somewhere other than the engine. there MIGHT be a compression increase, but i'm not positive on it.
i know the latest 3400 montes had tall gears, but not sure on the exact number...Comment

EPA would NEVER allow lean burn... timing: a larger bore requires more timing, so yes, there would be more than a 3100, but if its proportinate to the increase in bore, i don't know.Originally posted by IsaacHayes View Post

in the interest of fairness, i'll only include w-body 3100s...
2000-2004 3100 W-body - 3.05
1997-2004 W-body L67 - 2.93 except 2004 GTP with TAPShift, that got a 3.29Comment

On two seperate 700 mile trips (95% HWY) I recorded 25+ (US)mpg at 3500 RPMComment

entirely possible. a correctly tuned(meaning non emissions restricted) vehicle will always pull better fuel economy than the GM tune...Comment

when you start talking about that type of thing, you're diving into dynamic compression. if you open the throttle farther, the (dynamic) compression goes up, meaning better efficiency.Originally posted by SofaKingWeToddDid View Post
