  • LA1 LIM gaskets model year 2003

I have read much about the LA1 3400 intake manifold gasket issue, including the class action suit and settlement. One thing I've noted is that Pontiac Montana and some other cars in the 2003 model year but manufactured on or after April 10, 2003 are ineligible to participate in the settlement.

Now, my 2003 Montana would be ineligible anyway because to my knowledge this repair was never needed (I bought it used in 2008 with 56K on it, and there is no sign of trouble) and the active period for class action claims has expired.

But the April 10, 2003 date has me intrigued because mine rolled off the assembly line no earlier than late May 2003. Is the implication that an improved gasket was used beginning that date, and my risk of this failure is diminished?

Nope. My 2004 Monte Carlo just crested 85,000 miles and the L-I-M has begun to leak.

I'd like to know what the VIN Number of the Monte's they made was where they started using the upgraded gasket in the engine.

Go to most any parts store and get a set of Felpro "Problem Solver" gaskets.
