  • How hot before damage?

During the process of gettting my engine up and running ('02 3400) I got some air trapped in the cooling system that I had a bit of a battle with getting cleared. I got it out and the sytem up and running good. During that time the engine got up to 240* before I shut it down, and let it cool. I think it was at that temp for mabey 5 minutes at the most. Should I be concerned? I checked the oil, seems fine (normal color) and I am not seeing any color change in the coolant overflow tank. Is there any other ways to see if anything is damaged?

are you losing compression? oil/coolant mix? if none of those are present, i would say you're fine... it might not be in as good of condition as it was, but its probably not anything bad.

and the 240, was that the reading with or without the air in the system?

I didn't see any oil or coolant mixed in either the overflow or the oil pan. I don't know if I am losing any compression or not. 240* was with air in the system before I let it cool down. Then tried again and got the air out.

the reading of 240 was probably the steam created by the air pocket. drive it around see if it feels different....

I can't drive it right now, no insurance or rear brakes. I could probably get away with not having one, but not the other!

count that out then... well, i don't know what to tell you. if you want to know if its damaged, you either need to drive it or tear it down and look yourself.

compression check it, check all the fluids, & run it till it gets hot & the thermostat opens up-if anythings warped you should be able to hear a difference.
