  • Headers for a 99 L82 Lumina

I have a 99 Lumina that I've been trying to improve some since I got it. The wife and I kind of appropriated it from her dad when he got too old to drive it any more, and it's the base Lumina, and if any car ever needed performance improvements, this one is it. So far I've installed a Weapon R cold air intake, Magnaflow SS dual outlet muffler, Pontiac Montana aluminum wheels, and have ST sport springs that I just got last week and am going to buy GM LTZ/Police anti-sway bars front and back, which should help the suspension some. However, the stock exhaust manifolds are horrible as far as breathing goes, and I've been looking for anyone who makes headers for the 3100 L82 motor, and have come up empty so far. The only headers I've found for a 99 Lumina are from S&S, but they're for the 3400 engine. One of the threads I read here said that those can be modified to fit a 3100, but didn't say what had to be modified to make them work, or how much they had to be modified. Does anyone other than S&S make headers for a Lumina with the 3100 engine? Or for that matter, does ANYONE make headers for that car? I'm not trying to get too crazy with this car, just improve the efficiency somewhat. I already have 2 other project cars, so I definitely don't need another major automotive project. The Lumina is pretty much a daily driver, along with my Nissan Truck.

The S&S headers are as close as you'll get. The 3400 and the 3100 are identical except the bore size and the intake manifolds on your '99. The S&S headers will bolt right up to your engine and the mods needed are small. You can take a couple different approaches to the rear header and either one will been ok. Lets start with the front header:

You'll have to grind out one of the front engine mounts where it goes over the exhaust manifold so that it will clear the header tube and that's it.

On the rear you will have to remove the heat shields on the firewall that are above the downpipe to make more room. Then you can either tweak the firewall with a hammer so that the flange won't hit or you could cut the flange off and weld an elbow to the header to hook your exhaust up to it.

That's about it. Here are a couple of links that show the different approaches.

This link is long but I know that he pit headers on this car and talks about the front mount.

I have not put mine on yet or I could show you pics of it. I'm just waiting on warmer weather. lol

Any data available on the performance increase from these headers installed on the 95-1999 3100 Luminas/Montes?

Wondering about the approximate Hp increase with 2000+ intake manifolds, stock cam and heads, and the new headers combined. Or just the headers would do.

      Thanks.
