K to start with I have a 00 Grand prix 3100 v6. It has this weird sound it does only when cold, sounds like a lifter tapping. goes away above 1300 rpm and when warmed up. It does sound like it's coming from the top of the motor. My previous grand prix also had this same sound, but louder. I'm told it's common among the 3100 series and just wondering what it is (one mechanic says lifters, another says piston slap though I dont think it's pistons), and how can it be fixed?

I've heard people claim both as well, regardless just about every 3100 does/did this even when practically new so don't worry about it, just pretend you have a dieselSpudFiles

Mine had the same sound and people told me it was lifters. It's gone now. I put in a new timing chain and rubber chain guide (old turned to brittle plastic where the rubber was). Noise is gone. Now the only tick I hear is the injectors!
OH and I can hear a little piston slap when cold, but you have to get on the ground and listen under the car, that sounds more like a knock than a tick though.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)
