  • GM 3400 rear main bearing question

Hi guys.I'm a newbie to the forum.I have a question to ask if I may.I'm rebuilding a 3400 series engine in a 01' Montana.I have it on an engine stand.I'm not quite sure about the upper rear main bearing placement. In the block where the upper main bearing is placed, are two holes present. When I lay the new bearing in place, only one hole is in alignment with the block. The other hole in the block is covered over completely when the bearing is put into position. The hole thats covered over is almost located at the top where the main bearing cap meets the block. Is this the correct way of doing this?I don't want to risk engine damage to the rear main bearing and journal because of possible oil starvation.

How does the oil reach the rear main journal?Does it flow from the pump to the filter, through the cam bearings and down to the main bearings?

All the rest of the main bearing holes are in alignment with the block including the rear bearing but the hole thats covered over worries me.Is it supposed to be covered over?

I have the pistons and rods in place along with the camshaft.Tommorrow I was planning on installing the timing chain and front cover but the rear bearing has me second guessing myself.

If anyone has experience in this area or has an opinion on this matter,I would surely appreciate it.

    Thank you.

I think what your seeing is the passage that sends oil to the filter from the rear main cap. The hole is drilled from the rear main saddle to the oil filter mounting boss galley. This passage needs to be covered in order to send full pressure to the filter.

No Problem. When you e-mailed me I couldn't think of it. So I had to look at the diagrams.
