  • 1984 S10 Serpentine Belt Conversion Problem

I'm trying to convert my V belt drive system on my 1984 S10 2.8/3.4 GM crate motor (installed) to a serpentine system using a 1987 S10 Blazer doner conponents including brackets, a/c Compressor, power steering, alternator, water pump, etc. The problem right now is the water pump, they are not intechangeable atthe base or water jacket. So far I tried the water pump from a 1988 Fiero Gt but the housing is to short (has the same base and water jackets). Any suggestions on a water pump being that this engine was used in other applications.
    Thanks

You need a pump from an S-10 1987 or later. It has the longer snout that will support the use of a clutch fan. If you convert to an electric fan then you can use a Camaro water pump. You also need to change the front cover from a S-10 that uses a serpentine belt. Since you used the crate motor you have the correct oil pan to accept the new style front cover. You can change the front cover quite easily without completely dropping the pan.

Remember that serpentine belt water pumps run backwards to a standard V-belt pump. If you do not change the front cover which has the volute (swirls) for the pump cast in the opposite direction then you will severely limit coolant flow.
