No they never were. They are always cast aluminum. The Early FWD and RWD ones had a water pump that sat in the middle of the motor while the later FWD models had an offset pump.
You cannot get a cover that only covers the chain with a pump that is separate.1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma

EDIT: You have to remember the 60* is very narrow, that's why the timing cover and water pump mount are married.

I suppose you could machine the pump section off. But you would have to figure out how to get water into the block. Maybe use a remote pump? Maybe with tubes pressed into the front of the block and then attached to piping1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma

Yea I am sure you could do it then. I would either put threads in the block and screw in a pipe or press and solder in brass pipe.
Screw in ones would be better for service. I wonder how big NPT to AN fittings come? You may be able to use that. Standard stuff is always easier to work with.1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma
