  • Reverse rotation 3x00?

I am new at this game but last summer i put a 3400 in my fiero and I am loving it. anyway, my dad has a corvair sitting in his garage thats been there since i was a little boy. He doesnt drive it because apparently it doesnt run right. I am trying to figure out if i can stuff a 3500 under his trunk but after some research i found that the corvair engine is reverse rotation to work with his transmission. What would it take to run a 3x00 engine reverse rotation? My other idea is to grab a getrag and make some axles and run it just like my car. Any Ideas?!

It's not that difficult to get an older motor to turn the opposite direction, many boats with twin engines have one reversed.

Two major components are: one you need a cam to open the valves in the opposite direction, the other is the ignition timing.

Since most of the 660's are fuel injected and the more powerful ones don't have a distributor it's hard to say if it's going to be easier to make custom axels, mounts etc for the transmission - or to fabricate parts for the ignition and use the tranny in the car.

How much does the original Corvair engine weigh? Would a 3x00 lift the front wheels by nerely being bolted into the car?

Piece of an old Corvair motor:

The crankshaft trigger pattern for the DIS would need to be reversed, and shifted (would have to study it to say how much). One of the external DIS triggers sold here could probably be flipped over and re-drilled where it bolts to the balancer. Then the plug wires might have to be repositioned for a new firing order.

It would need a custom made camshaft. The distributor drive gears on the cam and oilpump drive would have to be made with reverse pitch teeth so oilpump would turn the correct direction.

And if it is a SFI motor, the camshaft sensor magnet (might?) have to be rephased so the ECM would not set a code. And then the injector conectors would need to be re-positioned to work with the new firing order.

Do all that and bolt up a reverseed starting motor and you should have it!!!

Getting the Corvair motor to work would be easier and more cost effective. Even if you get a reverse rotation v6 working you still need to make it fit in the engine bay. Design a cooling system and figure out how to make it bolt to the transmission.
