  • another stupid question

    firing order
    3400 vs 3500

so i was looking in the manual today to see what cylinder was what number to fit rings to each cylinder.

    in the book it said
(on both of these the numbers might be off, im going off memory, but the 2 center cylinders were switched around like that)
    3400
    136
    542

but on my 3500 intake manifold it said
    146
    532

i found that kinda odd... is the 3500 order really different??????

That has a picture of a 3500 LIM and the numbers match up with the gen2 LIM sitting in my garage.

Both of the number sequences you wrote down don't seem to match what I see.

    Firewall
    246
    135
    Radiator

Firing order on these motors is ridiculous easy to remember 1-2-3-4-5-6!

Ok easy way to distinguish cylinders in a block... FURTHEST Forward cylinder is #1 so that would be in a beretta the back cylinder by the passenger side, looking at the top of a block thats the furthest forward cylinder, then opposite side is #2 and so on, so the notation above is wrong its cylinders 2, 4, and 6 that are on the radiator side.

BUT yes "firing order" is even fire so its 1-2-3-4-5-6

Notice in this pic the front head is set further back... so the rear cylinders are further forward.

Actually here is a better picture with numbered pistons...

What I don't understand is if you look at the link above, the 3500 has the even numbers on the firewall side and odd number in front by the radiator. My 2.8 LIM has the same number positions.

There was an old saying that Henry Ford was right handed so the front right cylinder was the #1 cylinder. All others started with the left front cylinder as #1.

The Haynes manual confirms that old saying yet these LIM's say otherwise. What gives?

Pay closer attention to the LIM. The numbers are on the RUNNERS. So the numbers are physically on the wrong side, but their number is on the RUNNER that leads to the correct side. It can get confusing sometimes...

Apparently after looking it up Ford doesn't do their cylinder order anywhere near what I thought they did. That's what I get for listening to a school auto shop teacher.

                    LMAO!!

Well it definately was a good theory... Time to go back and tell that shop teacher they dont know what they are talking about.

Yeah I looked more and apparently the flat head Ford as well as some Audi's use that numbering scheme. Wikipedia says the flat head is the exception to the rule. Maybe that's what he meant.
