ok, im gettin to where all i have left to buy is sensors. which sensors should i buy? i need to have all them working correctly, if there is a chance that something could be giving me an incorrect reading that affects tunning and how the engine runs im going to replace it.

so far im thinking about getting:
oil pressure sending unit (this is just the sensor right? i never had one with my 3400 that read oil pressure so my gauge was always pegged, i know i have to get it for my ECU, not the engine)

    MAP sensor

TPS (whats that sensor next to this called? what does it do? get this for my ECU or engine?)

i already have a new IAT and temp sensor.

    thoughts? opinions?

The sensor right there with the TPS is the IAC (Idle Air Control).

I also recommend an O2 sensor (if you have emissions, that is).

If the engine is out of the car, I HIGHLY recommend the CRANK POSITION SENSOR. It is one of those sensors, that if it goes bad, the car will not run, and if you go to swap it out, and it breaks off, you have to drill it out. It is located on the BACK of the engine.

While you are back there, you might want to do a KNOCK sensor.

I don't replace em unless they break... LOL

My CPS is a bitch to get to on my car with the huge auto but I've replaced it several times no issue. Just don't get Autozone brand parts and it will last... that was why I had to replace it a few times. (well the stocker died after 140k or so)

My TPS is fine I verified it with TunerPro and ScannerPro. Easier than probing it with a DMM.

well i have a bare block, so its just a matter of putting them in.

do you recomend GM parts or would napa parts be just as good? napa may have the same parts as autozone, just reboxed lol.

I don't know what parts napa uses so I can't help there.

If you go to napa, buy echlin parts. They will cost you more, but they wont fail like the cheap ass line.

Honestly Id just go AC on as much as I could.

                  1. you do not need to replace your sensors, if you need a replacement i would go to the junkyard or AC DELCO (GM), ONLY. (if you have a bare block and no sensors, this is where I would start, the jy).

                  2. sensors do not just "go bad" a high percentage rate of the time, the occasional CPS, or a sending unit such as OPS (Oil Pressure Sender), CTS (Coolant Temp. Sensor), but that is it, most of the time the hard failure is an open or shorted circuit, NOT the sensor. An FSM will say this most always.

                  3. like Issac said, dont replace them unless they are bad, because if you go and start replacing all your sensors, you WILL be broke, especially if you go with the best sensors, AC Delco.

In the same aspect I do agree with junkyard low mileage OEM sensors and parts. However Standard Brand (http://www.smpcorp.com/) is what I use for most parts for over a decade.

Just replacing sensors will not in some cases work as replacing one sensor here which may be the problem in code may not be and can be out of parameter by a associative sensor. Useing cheap parts can throw off economy or other things as tolerances are in the minimum.

Last always clear or mem-cal or EEprom of faults, some do not clear if battery is removed.

Also it should realitivly easy to see a short or open on any OBD monitored device or coded sensor, a scanner makes it easy or voltmeter is a techs pet.

i used to go to the junkyard for sensors, but after getting like 4 bad DIS's, and 3 bad IAC's, and 7 bad MAP's, and 2 bad fuel pressure regulators, 1 bad engine with a broken valve, etc, I started getting new parts, and not trusting the junkyards down here.

FWIW the only factory sensor to go bad on my car was the CPS. I still have original coils with over 210k on them!
