  • would you do this?

in the picture below, you can see my customers LIM has a little corner cracked off. Kinda puzzling as to how this happened, but I noticed it when I was going along doing the gaskets.

The guy doesn't have a lot of money, so getting a new intake isnt his first choice. I'm going to go ahead and MacGyver it with a washer underneath and a bolt/nut deal to secure it. Theres like 50% contact between the LIM and the washer... so my vote is he won't run lean and burn a piston.

on a side note... see the brown ring around the LIM port there? if your were porting the holes... would you use that as an indicator of how far to go for your gaskets? ALSO... how the f%$k are you supposed to port the runners all the way down... what is EXTRUDE honing..

Do you know anyone with a TIG machine? You can quickly weld up the cast aluminum and then drill and tap it.

I guess you would weld below the gasket surface to avoid having to mill it?

mine worked fine, if i could have easily gotten someone to tig it up all nice i would rather do that.. but the longer bolt with a nut on it along with some JB WELD worked nice

this 3400 has 312,000 kms on the clock, and by the look of the gaskets I pulled out, they'd been done before. I suspect that whoever put the bolts in last time started some off on an angle . The bolt was probably forced in, cracked the end. It didnt finally break until I got to it.

both the angled lower intake bolts on the p-steering pump side were cross-threaded... it was a nightmare! a F*&KING nightmare to be precise. Ultimately, since there was about 50% contact area, I used a washer, lock washer, and another washer (sandwhich), and a nut and bolt.
i personally have no hesitations doing this... but my co-worker went as far as asking the guy if he'd like the LIM replaced... and I wasn't in the mood for that, switching over all the injectors, probably replacing all the o-rings... bahh! McGyver the bitch! works fine

it happens from to much torque on the upper intake bolts. Thats how i messed mine up.. turned a tad to tight, and the corner snapped off. I know its sorta hack to use the long bolt and nut, but it works.
