Sorry man but if your buddy had low pressure with a new pump and new engine something was out of whack. There is no way a HV pump should be needed to band aid a situation like that.

If anyone is going to use a HV pump go ahead. But just be aware of the negative effects. The worse case will be your sump running dry because all the oil is sitting at the top of the engine instead of in the sump. Other consequences will be heated oil, wasted horsepower, excess air in the oil and severe windage at the crank and rods. I just don't think it is a good idea to use a HV pump in order to compensate for a poorly built engine or oiling system. I think money would be better spent on a 3/4" pickup modification if possible and a properly built stock pump which has been blueprinted to reduce internal slip. Doing this will ensure an adequate supply at all times with a slight increase over stock but nothing approaching the stupid range.

betterthanyou makes alot of good points but left out a couple. Don't forget excessive wear on cam and pump drive along with additional stress on the timing chain/gears. Nothing worse than starting on a cold morning and shearing a pump drive gear. Not major on a engine with a distributor cause it wont run but these motors will start and run. If you are gonna use a hv/hp pump make sure you grind out all the flash in the block. Ive seen some drainback holes nearly flashed shut. Not a 60 v6 expert but I have seen problems with pumpin all the oil to the top, not sure if this is a problem with the 60 or not. Creates all kinds of problems when all of your oil is in top and none in the pan. Personally I would NEVER use a hp/hv pump on any engine unless its a race engine built with excessive main and rod clearances. Sometimes you build a race morot "loose" to free up some power and need additional oiling but never on a street motor.

Yea I completly agree. Often drag motors are built loose because the oil they run is cold.

Yeah you bring up a lot of good points and I've only ever heard of that one guy having problems so his pump(all tho brand new) must have bee faulty.

but keep in mind the TGP did use a HV pump. is the 3100 pump any better than the stock 2.8 pump, maybe I'll just go with that if its better for a little gain but thing crazy thats going to cause problems.

Well GM does call all of the later cast iron pumps HV pumps. The older aluminum pumps are considered the regular pumps. The other change was in the pump pickup tube which did increase in size. So It can be confusing.

A late model 2.8L pump will be the same as a 3100 pump.

the hv pump for GEN1,2,3 are the same pump and are equivalent to a turbo gp pump. You want a big honking pump a 3.4 tdc has the biggest..thhat is NOT to be used on the pushrod engines.I also think that regual pumps are are the same across the line as well
