Ok first of all I will tell you that I don't know a whole lot on the V6's so here it goes. I have a 2.8 out of an 84 s-10. I have a chance to buy the multi-port off a 89 firebird. What would be involved in swapping this over or will it even work? I can get the injection and harness for $200 and if it works it would be better than getting a new carb. Any help is greatly appreciated.

most parts should bolt right in. Only issues that come right to mind are that the older 2.8 is EXTERNAL balance, and newer is INTERNAL. If you use the newer block, then you will have the crank position sensor, but the older one will not and you can't just swap one in. I think the older also has the small journal crank, so I don't think you can just swap the cranks either.
If your block is good and you don't need to do anything to it, then tou might be able to get an external crank trigger. Some guys are using them for 3500 swaps so that the engine can be run on the older ECM, but I don't see what you could not adapt that to run MPFI on an OLDER engine.
Yeah, there is also some wiring you will have to do.Taylor

well, the newer setup's don't use a distributor. I will admit that I am not that familiar with the distributor setup, but I do know about the DIS setups. If you decide to go DIS, you can mount the ignition module, bracket and coils to the BODY of the car. It does not have to go on the engine.
I don't know how the Distributor setups work well enough, but if it uses the crank position sensor, then the external one will suit you just fine.

I'm gathering parts for pretty much the same build on a 2.8 stroked to 3.1. You dont need an external trigger for this upgrade the firebird distributor and ECM will take care of all of that. Bolt on the manifold wire up the electrics and you are done. My harness came out of a camero there were a lot of sending units on it that were not on my S 10 engine so you may want to grab all the sending units also. There are some other options to look at ,The later S 10 pu and blazers came with TBI might be an easier swap for about the same HP gain. Also check out Mega Squirts web site they have a cool stand alone ECM that would work well for this upgrade and its cheap! With the Mega squirt ECM you can eliminate a bunch of sensors and wiring but you have to program it your self.
FYI for future upgrades the engine you have isn't great, it has the smaller journal crank from 86 on the 2.8 had a larger crank and those blocks can be stroked to 3.1 easily. The easiest way to tell is the rear main seal' if it's a one piece seal it has the larger crank.
Good luck with the build.Last edited by lampy; 01-19-2008, 07:48 PM.Where ever you go.... There you are. (Buckaroo Banzai 1984)
