  • 3500 Ignition Control Module Opperation

I have a 2006 engine out of a G6. I have a handful of questions but I'll start with this one. The ICM only has 6 pins. I have no literature on how this thing works.

I was hoping this was similar to my 3400's ICM with the crank sensor driving the ignition and a single wire from the ECM for the advance. I didn't get to see the engine installed in the car and I'm not sure what the wiring looks like installed in a car. I would like to control the advance with my Megasquirt. Can anyone help or am I on my own?

It's completely different. the 3400 uses a 7x trigger wheel with a magnetic pickup, the 3500 uses a 58x wheel with a 3 wire trigger which routes into the ECM first then to the coil pack module.

I used a 100Mhz O-Scope and couldn't get any kind of a signal off the 3500's CPS. Not sure wtf is going on there..

So what do folks with 3500's swapped in do for their ignition control?

There is an external trigger (7x) sold on the store to remedy it.

          Yep

I'm using a ICM/coils from a 3400 (same as my stock 3.1) and the external trigger made by TCE (sold in the store here). Works very well.

So the crank sensor from the back of the block on the 3400 can bolt into that new bracket and you're back at where you started with the 3400 and 3400 ICM? Any pictures of this installed? Please?

If the store says "OUT OF STOCK"... pray?

This has been of interest to me as well since the ignition module for the 3500 and later is in the PCM. The coil pack has six wires and appears to be able to connect up as just 3 coils along with a 12v power supply. The 3500 wiring diagram is somewhere on this forum. I was hoping that each coil pack sire could be identified so that all one would have to do is connect them appropriately to the the terminals on the previous engines ignition module coil pack terminals.

The diagram indicates: IC 1 control, IC 2 control, IC 3 control, 12v, GND, Low reference.

That's 6 wires, I'm guessing the Low reference wire is for controling the timing. I would like to be able to use one of the 3 new design coil packs I have if it's possible.

Yeah just use the old style. Better IMO as if one thing dies (a coil or ICM) you can replace that instead of the whole shebang.
