  • 90 3.1MPFI timing question

Hope I posted this in the correct section, I am new to the forum and I have been racking my brain for the past 6+ months with a problem with my 90 3.1 Vin T.. About 6 months ago I had a friend visit who rarely ever has the ability to do so.. I decided to show off my swap project *3.1mpfi swapped into 82 citation* and I floored it which is something I hadnt done to it for fear of breaking something.. everything seemed fine til I turned it off and went to restart it the next day. It ran like crap thats putting it mildly. I discovered I had a spark plug wire that fried itself. After changing wires for Autolite Pro's and changing plugs it ran better but still not like it should, Its shaking at idle, exhaust burns your nose and eyes, lacking ALOT of power and gas mileage went through the floorboards. I replaced the timing chain 2 months prior to the initial incident and have since changed EVERY sensor on the engine, changed coil packs and ignition module, Fuel pressure regulator as well as injectors were tested and showing fine. Recently I bought an OTC-2000 scanner and decided to see if it would help me find the problem. Well my Spark advance should be 10-25degrees and it is showing 39-45 degrees!!! I then went out and picked up a vacuum gauge.. its showing 14-15in of vacuum which is extremely late timing ign. I checked my fuel pressure for just in case reasons and its showing 45lbs with key in the "ON" position and 41lbs at idle also changed the fuel filter and fuel sock. Compression test shows 160psi on all 6cyl, head gaskets replaced within last year, no engine knocks or anything, and all vacuum lines have been replaced. Also my BLM *block learn memory* is showing 100 instead of the 128 it should be around.. 100 is the lowest the ecm can possibly go so it is at the wall so to speak. I thought I jumped a tooth on the timing since I floored it. But either Im reading the notches wrong or something but my timing is still dead on with no broken teeth, no stretched chain and no play in it. I am VERY confused as to what it could be but nearly 7 months of trying is getting me severely angered..Does anyone have any Ideas? Also Computer was changed with known good one from friends car and the problem still showed up
I am at the end of my rope with this one.. can someone tell me 1 thing tho.. how exactly are you supposed to set the timing on these engines? Like I said they look right to me but I could be wrong.

you can't set the timing on these engines, other than through tuning. It's all controlled by the chip.

$5 says you have a plug wire swapped. Check out this diagram and make sure yours are right.

If I jumped a tooth on the timing gear it would definetly set the whole thing out of wack. With how its running.. it is giving those exact symptoms. Wires have been checked numerous times because I was thinking exactly that. Everything started the day I floored it.. will never do that again but Id like to find out what in the world happened

i beat the crap out of my old 3.1 MPFI and never had that happen.. the timing chain had 140K miles on it.. lol

It's got to be seriously loose to jump a link, so loose that before that you would hear the chain clunking around at idle and the engine would run pretty bad. The timing chain cover gasket is $12, not terrible to pull off and just do a visual check. just remember to drain the coolant, lol.
