  • PUSHROD crisis!

Well lets just say I'm rebuilding my stock 3.1 motor out of my 1997 chevy lumina sedan. I had already bought a new set of pushrods(Stock). But while handling less important matters I happen to mix up the original intake and exhaust pushrods. Well I know the difference between the two, but my problem is not knowing which rod goes where as far as placement back into the engine. Man am I screwed! HELP Please!

intake pushrods are SHORTER, EXHAUST PUSHRODS are LONGER.

    INTAKE - 144.18 mm (5.68 inches)
    EXHAUST - 152.51 mm (6.0 inches)

    Information taken from a GM 1996 W-body platform service manual, page 6A5A-26 3100 SFI V6 engine on-vehicle service L82 (VIN M)

You could have also just drope them in, its almost 100% obvious when you put an exhaust pushrod on a intake lifter it's just not right.

For someone who doesnt work with these engines all the time you might not tell the difference right away. I know theres been shops around here that have made that mistake. ( giving people the benefit of the doubt here )

But just match up the intake and exhaust pushrods to the motor. Youll be able to tell.

This is true... sometimes I over estimate someone's knowledge because its like second nature to me...

If you're asking which one goes where it's in this post. Good Luck

So what exactly happens if one was switched? I know people say it ruins the engine, but what are the initial symptoms?

LOL, yeah, I assume something horrible like that, I guess I meant things like performance, horrible noises, violently shaking engine, etc.

Well when you start it up you'll know somethings not right. It will run like crap or not run at all or even start and make a terrible noise.

Ok, one reason I'm asking is that when I put a new LIM in my car (it has a noise problem--before and after) I'm paranoid that I may have screwed up the rods, but I think it runs and drives too good to have done that. I'm going to stop worrying about that part.

when i bent my valves, the engine just died and would not restart.
