  • New here, hello!! Is a 10048696 head a HO head?

Hiya guys, I'm new here! Happy holidays to everyone. Quick Q for what seems to be a very knowledgeable bunch of car guys: I just picked up a rebuilt 3.1 Lumina APV Vin 'D' iron long block. On it was a pair of (also rebuilt) iron heads with casting number 10048696. Are these High Output heads? Other than that number is there any way of telling while they are mounted if these are HO heads? BTW, this is going in an '88 Fiero GT to replace the ailing 2.8 MPFI lump and I'd rather use the fresh heads on the new block if they are HO. Happy New Year!!

I'm pretty sure any iron head after like 85 is considered a "high-output" head. But I'll let the iron head guys answer as well, just in case...

All iron heads 86+ are the same (EFI).

EDIT: Unless someone put rebuilt carb heads on there, but it's doubtful. Can you measure the valves?

Interesting... from what I understand from some archived research was that the reason the 3.1 Lumina Throttle Body Injection minivans put down less horsepower but had bigger displacement mills than the Fiero was a combination of small valve iron heads (not-H.O.) and a very non-aggressive cam. Has anyone done a similar swap?

Uh-huh! Didn't consider the different injection systems could be such a big factor. I believe the APV is rated at 120 HP and the Fiero at 140.

The Fiero and the Lumina both have HO heads.

Just for future reference there are NO 3.1L or 3.4L engines with small valve heads from GM. You can only have a 2.8L with small valve heads, and that engine has to be a pre 86 carbureted motor
