  • Self aligning rocker arms

I am replacing a 97 3.1 with a 93 or possibly 94 3.1. my 97 is worn out. I'm using my 97 upper intake, coil pack breather box, valve covers(aluminun vs. plastic) and of course all of my accessory brackets and motor mounts. My question is, on 97's they have self aligning rocker arms. can i use these on an older engine? By the way this is my first engine swap, so any helpful hints will be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Oh yeah if there is anything else I can use off fo the more modern engine just let me know.

    Moved to correct forum.

As far as the swap goes, is there a reason you are going to an OLDER engine? The 93 would in fact be a significant downgrade, since it would be a GEN2 design instead of the GEN3 design (unless you get one from a 93 A-body or Cutless Supreme).

As far as using the rockers, they are a no go. The heads must have notches in them for the self-aligning rockers to work. Heads didn't start coming with these notches until mid-year 95.

      another quick ?

Is there any way to positively identify the engine(other than the fact that it is a 3100sfi). I'm not sure what it came out of. I know by the plastic valve covers it's pre-96. Are there any indicators on the block, heads etc.etc that would clue me in. I bought the engine In Atlanta from a large salvage yard. I'm going to run the crap out of it while I save up for a 3.4..........My sister has an Alero maybe I can borrow hers for the weekend and bring it back with my 3.1 upper half........she'd never know the difference.Just kidding.

So you already have it? And it is in fact a 3100? If so, just pull the valve covers and look at the rockers. If they are stamped rockers, take one off and look for the notches in the heads (you will know it if you see it). Another way to possibly tell the year is by looking at the EGR. If it is different than your current one, then it is probably a 94-95.

thanks, the egr is different. now at least I know what I have. I know the older model is a definite down grade, but I got to get on the road, I plan to buy a new 3.4 and build it up when the $$$$ is right. I got the 94-95 3.1 for $400. My '97 3.1 is good on the bottom half so I'm going to keep it and doctor it up also. I'll probably try to find a 1986-88 fiero gt to put that one in.I used be a v-8 guy but now between gas prices and the fact that every one else is so scared to work on front wheel drives I feel like I'm doing something that is unique(at least in my small town). I live in georgia so most of my friends want to either rebuild rusted out relics, or see how high they can lift their K-5 blazer and drive thru red-mud.The only frustrating thing so far is the lack of performance parts. I can have a cat-back exhaust fabbed up, and I can make a cold air intake but I'm having trouble finding everything else in between. Where can I find some speed parts? Keep in mind I'm new to the whole 60 degree v-6 thing so I'll probably be asking some dumb questions here and there.
