  • Diagrams / vacuum / carb for 2.8 engine

Sorry if I am messing up the structure these forums have... but I am new to the place and ... with a limited time to get to know the place like the back of my hand.

I requested info on vacuum diagrams here: http://60degreev6.com/showthread.php?t=37388

Another member recommended me to post in here for technical issues, rather than to post in the "off topic" one... (makes sense)...

The engine is a 2.8 L carburated (2bbl) from 1985 sitting in a chevy celebrity (the original host).

Any help would be very welcome, since the car is swallowing gasoline as if it was paid to do it (down to 8,7 miles on a gallon at the price of $5.40 per gallon).

Diagrams over the carburator would probably be helpful in my case as well... or just to know what carb(s) can be mounted on it without problems. It seems as if a lot of the original parts on the carb are missing as well ... car runs well though (after intensive repairs ever since I purchased it a few months back).

Anyone know of freely available online repair manuals for this vehicle ... haynes or chilton's or... even the original one.

    Thanks in advance.

Have you tried going to your local library? Many times, they have Haynes manuals there to look at.

I live in Peru - South America... no manuals available anywhere. When I lived in Iceland, I used to buy both Haynes and Chilton's manuals for the cars I had... but this is a different universe down here.

That's a helluva change in locales and temperatures I would think. Very sad about the earthquake in Pisco. Hopefully you have no relatives in that area. Are you far from there and did you feel the earthquake?

I don't have any solid answers for you about your car. My only suggestion would be to order a manual online or a subscription at alldata.com. With gas prices being so high, you should get your money back quickly in fuel savings if you do much driving at all. Perhaps someone else will jump in with info on what other carbs might fit your engine.

Also, I am not sure but the distributor may be electronically controlled. If so, there is a plug that must be disconnected before setting the timing.

An Alldata account would probably be your cheapest and fastest method. You can get a year subscription for you vehicle for $20. www.alldatadiy.com

I have some CDs from a GM Dealership which might have something, but I'd have to dig them out and install it all again. It won't happen today, but I might be able to do it tomorrow.

this is pretty much the simplest vacuum diagram I could find. I just went to AUTOZONE.com and looked in the repair section. They have all of the diagrams listed there for 1985.

In the other post, you put your vin number, and even though it was incomplete, the engine code was there (you forgot the check digit next to the X, which for your car is a 9).

For 1985 VIN x 2.8's, they have 4 vacuum diagrams. Maybe this one will help you more. This one has the least number of components. The other one I listed, I think it was for a VIN w 2.8.

Thanks a lot to you all! This diagram does actually look more like the remains of the vacuum system on my car. My canister is not connected at all... and some of the valves seem to be missing from my engine as well, but this will absolutely help! Autozone repair guides... never knew these existed, and the www.alldatadiy.com link sounds like a good move. Thanks again!!

Regarding the earthquakes here. I live in the capital Lima, and this was the biggest quake I have ever felt. Being Icelandic, I am very familiar with earthquakes, even big ones, but this beat anything I have ever in my wildest dreams come to think of.

Here is my first account (posted less than an hour after the quakes hit):

Just got home. This was ******* HUGE!

I was driving my wife back from a factory and we were close to the center of Lima when the first one hit. We were stopped in traffic and the car moved. First I thought it was my wife shaking a leg... it wasn't. I checked the side and review mirror, thinking someone was shaking the car or trying to steal the tires or something (intensity of the shaking)... then I thought the car behind me was pushing my bumper... moved more forward, shaking continued and intensified. Put the car in Park and gassed up the engine (thought maybe it had thrown a rod or something, getting it out of balance... wasn't that, and the car started JUMPING on the damn road, people out around us grabbing whatever they could grab to stand on their feet. All cars just jumping up and down (like in the movie "Godzilla" when it was walking in the streets and all the cars jumped up and down).... I saw that buildings and road signs and lightposts went into swinging movement, things just got worse and worse. Instinct kicked in and I had the thought: "Have to get out into the free!" ... only to smile at such primitive reaction. There were no tall buildings which could fall on us where we were, and fortunately we were not under any bridge...

It was simply insane how it went. Right after the first one passed, the second quake kicked in with even more force. This went on for over 2 minutes, so there was enough time to really get into the rhytm. At one point it felt as I was getting sea-sick... having lost all sense of balance.

My wife went into panic mode... tried to use the NEXTEL radio phone... but conveniently the NEXTEL network AND all of the mobile phone networks went dead in the quake... and are still out of service. Where we were downtown, many streets around us went into blackout.

So.... this was the real thing.

The epicenter was some 140 km south of Lima, and that's where the strength was 7.5 on Richter, while it was only 6.0 on Richter here in Lima... which explains why I can still see buildings standing.

People everywhere went into panic, fleeing their houses, businesses closed, universities and other institutes closed and everyone got into the streets, making the normally 12 minute trip to home, to more than an hour. Everything is simply insane trafficwise.

Our biggest concern was of course the kids at home, but fortunately nothing happened apart from things falling on the floor. Nothing serious happened in our case, but I am sure others have not been that fortunate.

The quake is reported to have been felt all the way up to Columbia and down to Chile. On the radio just now they were reporting that the ocean ***aftershock right here*** yes, the ocean is retracting... so there is obviously a tsunami coming a bit later.

... and I still remember my wife telling me during my first months here: "There are never any earthquakes in Lima" ... to which I responded: "Can you tell me how the Andes mountains were made then?"
The affected areas are still being hit with big quakes, destroying already damaged structures. Day before yesterday some 17 people were killed in a hospital when a wall fell over them... it is a terrible situation for the affected people, and help can't get there fast enough... as it is always in disaster areas.

The building I live in was seriously damaged structurally, but it will probably never be repaired, so when it crumbles, it will be a "surprise" to the people who live here. It cracked all the way from the ground and up to the roof (5 floors) the crack being around one inch at the top, and a quarter of an inch at ground level.

              Life goes on though...
