  • rebuilt 3100 problem

I just finished rebuilding engine in a 94 grand prix. Started it this am heard rattle from left side of motor. My wife said the oil pressure light was on. Hard to believe I had her run it a little more as I looked in oil fill cap and I could see oil moving around. Shut down motor and have been scratching my head since. I filled oil pump when it was installed. it was upside down on stand when I put pan on. I spun motor to align timing gears. I believe the oil pump has an air lock or partial. noise from motor is opposite end of pump. I'd like to take dist cap off to spin pump with a drill. I took upper intake off and the stainless fuel lines are in the way. I never unhooked them for the rebuild, just moved intake out of way. Am I looking for trouble by unhooking them or is there another way. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm at the end of my rope with this car. I know enough about this stuff to be dangerous

If you've had the bottom end apart it's always a good idea to prime the oil pump.. it may make a little mess but it's well worth it.

you shouldn't have a problem with disconnecting the fuel lines, i take mine off all the time..

Humm... I didn't have my bottom end totally apart but the engine did sit for a very long time, had the pan off and wiped it clean too. To prime I just pulled the fuel pump fuse and the ignition fuse and cranked it 3 times for 5-7 seconds each... waiting a few moments between cranks for the starter to cool. After I put the fuses back in it fired up fine, no noise.

I also filled the oil filter with oil when I installed it.

Now was the actual oil pressure light on (little oil can light I believe), or the words that say "LOW OIL"? The LOW OIL one always seems to come on after just an oil change even, would probably stay on for a tiny bit after a rebuild but that still doesn't explain your noise.

I'm going to try and take fuel lines off tonight. And spin pump with drill, I really think that it has some air in there. With a drill I can vary speeds and try to get it out. Is there a good absolute way to know if I got it primed or not? Is the 4t60-e the tranny? if so I'm not sure, it's an auto. The little oil can is on. Maybe I should pull fuses first and try it. Are the fuses in the car or under the hood?

most of the fuses for the engine are under the hood.

            4T60-E is the transmission.

If you pull the oil pan off, make sure the pickup for the oil pump didn't fall off. I saw a camaro do that once. The tube and screen had just fallen off of it. Put it back on and everything was fine again.
