  • 3500 GP First Start

This is the project that has been going on for quite some time now in the 3500 swap sticky in the Performance section. I didn't want to post this in that thread since I think only a few of you very helpful people check that thread anymore

Regardless, this is about the third start of this engine just today. In the video I have my mom start it as I walk around the engine bay. It was filmed with a digital photo camera so the sound isn't that good... it is actually MUCH deeper and MUCH louder than it sounds in the video. When I first started it, a neighbor a good bit from me came over wondering WTF was going on. Most of my neighbors know what I am doing since they could hear me out there night after night cussing at various parts... some of them came outside and clapped today

When I put the camera on the ground to hear under the car, the idle jumped up to 1400 RPM's due to the ECT not reading so that is why the sound all of a sudden changes. So far I have only drove it off my driveway then put it back.

Mods - 1393 cam from 60degree store, 65mm TB, Comp Cams springs, custom push rods, S&S headers.

    This is open headers BTW.

Get a new domain name for your startup. Quick and professional service. Seamless domain transfers.

Right Click> Save As will probably be your best bet.

EDIT - Oh and BTW, the waterpump is running fine.... it looks like it is jumping along in the video but that is just due to it's speed vs the cameras speed.

Glad it's running. Just a few kinks and then you can tune it. Are you going to beef up the suspension or motor mounts any? Glad you went with those headers, the extra power is worth it. Video is downloading on my slow WiFi right now... (gonna shoot this router)

The motor mount is a solid one from NAPA. For suspension I swapped the addco bar that was on my sedan to this car, KYB's on the back, KYB's are going on the front along with my set of Intrax springs, Energy Suspension bushings are on there, Awebb's rear STB is on there, I have the front STB from GM, trailing arms... just about everything you can do aside from coil overs or a different leaf spring.

I just hope the Intrax springs don't lower it so much that I will be forced to lower the rear as well.

I don't know if it's the solid mount, or the fact that the engine is tight in there with the headers or what but when you start this thing the engine is rock solid, doesn't flex at all. My 3100 and even my moms 3100 in her 03 buick move all over when you start them, this is solid.

Sounds good I plan on swapping my 3500 into my 91 or 96 grand prix. Thanks for sharing the process with us and the video of it running What are you using computer wise?

With the 96 you can swap in a certain 97 PCM to get more tuning functionality, so that is what I did. 97 PCM in there (fits right in, no wiring needed), flashed with a modified 97 Venture Van BIN file, it works good and the BIN file is fully mapped in Powrtuner (96 PCM's barely have any functions available, it's even a smaller .BIN file).

ok cool, I was wondering if it would be that simple with my 96.Im leaning more towards obd1 and the 5 speed since the car needs a drivetrain and the 96 dohc is working just fine.

Ah nice, solid mount. I noticed in the video how the engine doesn't shake at all. Very nice. Those dog bone front mounts are a lot beefier than my silly side mount. Keep us updated with videos! Exhaust, first drive, etc lol.

"Don't touch the gas, turn the key" ROFL... Thats when a remote starter comes in handy

Looks good, idles rather smooth too, what cam is that again?

Its a 058 PCM that swaps in perfect. I tried that one out on my retta when a few mentioned it on the powrtuner forum. I just went for it and blam it worked fine.
