  • HELP!swapping a 3.4l in place of a 3.1l

im currently getting ready to swap out the severely messed up 3.1 i have in my 92 firebird with another motor, i was thinking 2.8 because the motors are so drastically similar, but i was recently contacted by a local who wants to sell me the 3.4 out of a 95 camaro and says it would bolt right in. would this be harder than installing a 2.8? i would think because of the year difference there would be a lot of stuff that needs messed with but id rather ask you guys because you are very knowledgeable about this kind of stuff.

    Thanks! Jon

No, it's just as easy as bolting in a 2.8.

Just retain your induction and other parts that differ.

Basically you'll use the long block, and won't regret it.

what about the electronics? im just afraid that the difference in years will mean a lot more emissions stuff and electronics, emissions is a big thing im worried about (not the actual emissions, for which i could care less, but for the emissions parts that i might not know how to hook up properly and may make the care like run crap or not at atll). would the tranny and motor mounts bolt right up, as well as the accessories off of the old motor?

Use your existing electronics, intake manifold, etc...

when you say use the existing electronics, are you including the ecu? also what do i do with all of the emissions vac lines and ****, is there a diagram anywhere that shows how to gut the unnecessary ones, because thats pretty well my biggest worry with it, that something along those lines isnt going to want to hook up to the firebird or that i wont know where to hook it.

You would just use the longblock, which is a direct replacement. Everything that something plugs into gets swapped over to the 3.4, so it's not an issue.

no doz, is that your ad that's posted on the columbus craigslist? Just curious.

Incase you don't understand... they're saying use the 3.4 block, and heads, but bolt on the 3.1 intake, accessories, and everything else... If you have a digital camera. take lots of pics during diss assemble. So you know what goes where. Lots of pics, even if you think they'll be stupid. Then during re-assemble you put everything back like it was at the start . Every vac. hose, every wire, every bracket/bolt. Then you'll have no problems .
You may or may not know 10 times what i do.
