  • EGR swap and injectors

    Hey all.

I got a 96' Grand Am with a 3100. Has stamped steel rockers. I'm going to slap in a 00' lower/upper intake and throttle body. Here's the questions:

I got ahold of the EGR with a really flexible tube for the 00' intake. Will it work with my 96' electronics. The connector "looks" the same.

Also I would LIKE to use the fuel injectors that came with the 00' intake. Anyone try this??? Does it make my A/F go crazy??

Any other conflicts/suggestions with this setup??? I really dont want to get a adaptor for the 96' EGR(the plugging up issue).

Ok thats all any help greatly appreciated.
Hmm, the search here doesnt work.

Why doesn't the search work? Works for me, and I even logged out and it worked. Not sure why people are having issues with it.

I think its the security settings of Internet Explorer. I had it set to "High" and when I switched it to "Med High" it worked.

I use FireFox. I gave up trying to make IE secure on the last computer. This one has been going IE free, and spyware free since august 2004!

        1) Do your rockers have roller fulcrum? I would think so being a 96. If not then you need to clearance the LIM.

        2) EGR should work with the ECM just fine. The EGR tube may or may not reach and bolt into the spot where you bolt it into your exhaust manifold.

        3) Keep your stock injectors unless you have the ability to edit the computer. Swapping them will make it run pig rich since the computer doesn't know the new flow rate of those injectors. Your stock ones will work just fine for this mod.

        4) You'll need to tap the LIM where the coolant pipe goes into I'm pretty sure. I think they changed styles in 99+ so your 96 still uses the screw in fitting.

I'm not positive about this... but I suspect that that lower intake won't work with those heads. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong... but I know that the LIM gaskets are a different part number. I'm told that the ports are bigger on the newer engines ('99 and up?), in which case any performance gain might? be offset by port matching issues.

Also, there are at least three different EGR setups for these engines. One style uses three solenoids, and the other two styles use stepper motors. I would be shocked if the three-solenoid style is compatible with the stepper motor style. Don't know about interchangeability between the two styles of stepper motors- first thing I'd look at is the plug, to see if it'll even plug into the wiring harness.

As far as I know, some '95 engines had roller rockers... and all '96+ engines do.

Also, I agree about that heater hose pipe. Not sure if it's a good idea to tap out to 1/2" NPT (which is the size of the threads in your current intake) as there's a pretty big groove machined into that hole for the o-ring. Another heater hose pipe might be an easier option.

Hey all just a little update.

I used fel-pro permaseal gaskets for the lower intake, its universal and works with or with out pushrod guides, and it seemed like a hell of a beefy gasket(its metal with rubber inserts). I read somewhere that a 00' LIM would go on a 3100 early style with no banging into the rockers, well thats not true, unless they switch styles somewhere. Ended up heli-coiling a stud hole. Everything else seems to be coming together really smooth. Heres a updated pic:

So the ports lined up ok? Perhaps I was smokin' crack.

What about the EGR valve? If the wiring isn't compatible, there IS the option of making an adapter plate. It wouldn't be difficult, but would require some machining. I know that it's been done before.

Actually, if you were ambitious and patient... and could acquire an appropriately sized chunk of steel, you might only require a drill press to make an acceptable adapter.

I didn't think the ports would line up well either. AFAIK, the 3 solenoid egr was never used on the 3X00 motors and the later two are electronically interchangeable, so it won't be a problem.

So you have a 96 but DONT have the roller fulcrum rockers?? ODD! yeah you'll have to grind to clearance the LIM then. 96 should have stepper motor EGR and should be able to use the 00 stepper.

94-95 3100's had the 3 solenoid EGR, which you can get an adapter for either style 3400 UIM on the sore.

Whats the better rocker anyways? I saw that the studded one is 1.6 which was better than the roller that had a 1.8?? 2.5?? i forgot. Right now im not gettin into rocker ratios cause im not changing the overall motor. I would rather have the roller but is there a trade off in ratios???

Also, I AM very interested in tweaking the computer. What would be the best way of doing this. I dont have too many tools however, I have SnapOns' MODIS for doing lots of stuff but mostly diagnostic type stuff like operating actuators monitoring parameters etc etc. I could plug a puter in I think but I would need a cable and some software.

All the SFI 3100/3400's had 1.6 ratio rockers. If you don't have the roller fulcrum ones then's it's likely your car had a swap in the past with a 94-95 motor. Either that or your car is really a 94-95 Grand Am.

And if you don't have the roller fulcrum rockers on there (not roller tip, but where it rocks/pivots) then the rockers will hit the lower intake manifold. You'll need to grind clearance for it in that case on the manifold.

If the car is indeed a 96 (what kind of OBD connector do you have?) it should be OBDII and you can get a DHP powertunr to edit the ECM.
