There are gen 1 and gen 2 iron head actually. Small valve heads are gen 1. The 3.4 camaro is a gen 2 3.4 iron head. Yes, it can all get confusing if you haven't been around this site forever:P

I'm lurking occasionaly. It's tough because I'm usually too busy with the Army or my 5.0 Mustang. Which is for sale.

Uhh no. :-?
I really hope you're trying to be funny, failing, but I hope that's your intent. besides there were small journal 2.8s with the large valves, in the "H.O." version.
Iron head/inline valves on a 660 = genI (I mentioned the inline valves simply because there are a couple sets of genI aluminium heads floating around.)

Why do you hope I was trying to be funny? I wish you would drop your lame ass attitude when we try to have a discussion. I don't know a lot about the iron heads or rwd apps so I always thought there was a gen 1 and gen 2 iron head. Yes, they had HO versions but I associated the newer motors with the larger crank mains and fuel injections and larger valves as being gen 2 iron head. If you want to say the 3.4 is generation 1 with the 1980 2.8 carb, then thats cool. There is not gen 4 then I take it. Thats just crank, rods, heads, intakes, but its still the same basic block design as gen 3.Ben

I am with Raven. The journal size or valve size was was not enough to signify a new generation of motor. Completly new heads or the redesign of a block is enough to signify a generation change. Hence the Gen II and III motors.
The SBC was considered a Gen I motor until the LT1 was released and it went through valve size changes, flat hyd and solid cams and then roller cams, bearing changes, seal changes and some off shoots like the 400 siamese cylinder block. But it remained gen I until they added reverse cooling new water pump style and a different ignition.1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma

I figured as the curator of this site, you'd have your head a little less into being all DOHC and actually check into the information on the other versions of the 660.
I mean I try and learn as much as I can about all generations of the 660 along with other engines.
I mean it's common friggen knowledge that all iron head 660s are considered "genI", people who barely know anything about the 660 seem to understand this. *shrug*
And no I'm not saying that because you run the site you should be the all knowing, but basic things like generations I would have thought would not be a question.

Look at it this way, knowing the generations of this engine is like knowing how to tie your shoes before you go running, simple shit.Last edited by Guest; 05-17-2007, 12:14 PM.
