  • 3.4 cam noise?

little back ground, i bought a 99 GA with the standard LIM, it also had both heads blown and 5 bad lifters,
what i did: full valve job,12 new lifters, new updated intake gaskets, did the o ring for the oil pump drive, and new head bolts.
what happened: it was fine, drove it around town for a few days, tested it to 6k a couple times, it was smooth and quiet.
took it on a 200 road trip, just 65-70. went out to eat, all good. got up the next morning and a clatter, at first i thought it was a rod, then maybe a piston. so i drove it carefully home(200 miles). started hunting for an engine.

ok now up to yesterday, after another 150 miles driving it. last night i pulled the pan, then pulled each rod bearing, and look up each cyl bore. all rod bearing are perfect, not good, perfect. no scuffs on any cyl walls.
there was a fine grey metal sludge in the bottom of the pan. i cleaned everything up and put it back together. noise is still there(duh).
do you think i swiped a cam lobe?(oh,no loose rocker arms). what kind of timing chain do these engines use?
after i put it back together, i tested the engine to 6+ about........well alot.
the noise never changes, and the engine seems to have good power.

The rockers are net lash and require no adjustment. So as long as the bolt is still tight it is still in adjustment.

Do you notice the noise changing with temperature or load? If so it is more likely a piston on lower bearing. Rocker (valvetrain) noise will just become more rapid with RPM.

did some more checking to night, it's number 5. and seems to be the wrist pin not sure what i'm going to do know, fix the one hole or do a complete swap. for the time and money, changing out the complete engine might not be a bad way to go.
mostly i'm worried i'll do all this and find something else wrong.
