You don't need a different cam. You just need the sensor that matches the cam. And the crank trigger only changed in the 3500, not the 3400.
To answer your first question, yes you can put an 05 3400 in your car. There may be a few small things that you'd need to exchange between engines (sensors come to mind, and maybe the timing cover), but other than that, its almost a direct replacement.-Brad-

you point me to where i could do some more reading on these? the JY interchange is 96-99, then 00-02, 03-05. what i've read on here lead to make my opinions on the cam, cranks sensors. also if i adapt the wires to a 00-02 engine will the ecm agree? lol
i'm more of a quad guy, this is my first 3x00 series.

Well, instead of pointing you in a direction, I'll give you an example. I have a 94 Beretta (stock 3100) that I swapped in an 02 3400 and didn't do any rewiring. The JY interchange is doing to give you a DIRECT replacement. Therefore, if there are any slight differences, its not considered a DIRECT replacement to them. But, there have been enough people on here that have done this swap that whatever you end up getting, we can help you get it installed an running.
There is also www.3400swap.com which will semi-explain some of the sensor issues (although it's too old to cover an 05 3400... but nothing changed anyway).-Brad-

It isusually the PCM as well as the exhaust that makes the difference.-Brad-
