  • Are 3100 pushrods hardened?

I am building a 3400/2.8 iron head hybrid to go in my fiero. Because the 3400 has taller (roller) lifters, mt 2.8 pushrods are too long. The longer pushrods from a 3100 seem to be just the right length at 6.080", but I do not know if they are hardened to work with guideplates. The 3100 does not use guideplates, but my engine will.
How can I tell generally if a pushrod is hardened?

They are not hardened. 6.080 isn't going to be an off the shelf pushrod either. 6.050 or 6.100 would be the closest you could find.

I have pretty much resigned myself to having to get custom pushrods made. The shortest "off the shelf" pushrods I have been able to find have been 6.125"
      Thanks for the info.

Get pushrods from a 3100 between 1993 and 1996 they do not have self aligning roller rockers and use guideplates. These pushrods will be hardened.

I have never seen any proof that later pushrods are not hardened. It may just be theory

Well, they dent in my pushrod holder and a hardend pushrod won't do that. Not a crimp or anything severe but it leaves a little mark.

I sell custom length pushrods (will be on the store this week after i get my aluminum blocks to complete my setup). If you go custom, get the exact length you need since it costs the same to be exact vs close.

If you want to know if they are hardened, go to any reputable machine shop and have one checked for Rockwell.
