  • 91 3.1 rwd, no start. Blown h/g?

Well my cousin bought a 91 camaro, 3.1. well it ran good when he got it, he let his friend drive it and by the time heis friend got back it mwas bellowing white smoke and now it won't run. He recently put a egr valve on it becaue the old one was just blocked off (he doesn't know about emmision deleting yet). But now it won't start, it gets gas and spark, just no compression to fire. Would it be worth it to rebuild the top half and hope for the best or to just get another 2.8, 3.1, or 3.4 and throw in there? if he goes 3.4 can all the 3.4 sensors and stuff run on the 3.1 computer? i'm not familiar with efi 60 degree motors, now give me a tbi setup and i can run with it lol.

The white smoke is pretty telling, and lack of compression would certainly indicate a problem. Can't hurt to pull the heads off and see what you've got.

What did the oil look like? If it's clean, you may have a good chance of saving the motor. If the oil got antifreeze dumped in it, that's bad for the bearings and there could be issues in the future. If you find that, you may want to take a chance or just pull the motor and slap in a 3.4.

The 3.4 should run fine using all of the 3.1's injection components, manifolds, accessories, etc. If it tends to run a bit lean, you could always have a custom chip made for it.

The block will bolt up to the '91's tranny same as the original motor.
